Σκοπος

The aim of the MA in "International Studies" is to prepare student to pursue a wide range of careers in the field of international relations, crisis management and energy sector including work for national governments, of IGOs and NGOs. The master program is addressed to the executives of the state, the public and the private sector, to officers of the Armed Forces, Security Forces and Civil Defense, to Fire Service and Coast Guard - Greek coastguard, to staff of Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Defense, of the Interior and other Ministries, to autonomous public, semi-public or private law governmental organizations of Greece and Cyprus, as well as to people who aim for a career in international organizations and government bodies, business groups and enterprises in the energy sector.

The program ensures that graduates emerge with a comprehensive perspective on international issues and a clear understanding of the means by which these issues are researched, discussed, and acted upon, in order to be able to handle national and international security issues, fundamental in daily life not only for the individuals themselves, but also for effective functioning of States, businesses, international institutions, the public and the private sector and their staff as well.

More specifically, Crisis Management and Conflict Resolution specialization, aims at offering thorough theoretical background in the field of conflict management and resolution among states and third parts involved in the crisis, by exploring internal dynamics, multileveled perspectives and practical problems raised in the modern international states’ system and the transnational, intra-state, national and intra - community environment. Through case studies, emphasis is placed on the issues, mechanisms and practices of conflict and crisis prediction, deterrence, management, mediation and resolution.

The program attempts to approach conflicts and crises with reference to international and socio-political processes, to international institutions promoting justice, while emphasizing on structural cultural differences which are considered as a major cause of crisis and conflict phenomena. The analytical approach takes into consideration theoretical schemes, assumptions and perspectives which are used as an explanatory basis when approaching security issues and peaceful cooperation among states. For this reason, the program includes core coursework that covers the fundamentals of international relations (IR) and international politics theory, research methods in IR, the workings of the global economy, and an overview of global security issues.

Strategy specialization emphasizes on understanding modern warfare and the use of military force in the pursuit of policy objectives. The program aims at providing an integrated approach to the concept and the nature of strategy and the evolution (from antiquity to the present) of the strategic studies field. The specialization is designed to give students a solid grounding in the history and substance of national and international security problems, as well as the skills to conduct original research and analysis on contemporary security issues, such as the changing nature of the international system, the emergence of non-state actors, new forms of war, terrorism, organized crime, internet safety, arms proliferation etc. This specialization covers theory and practice of strategy, while the theory of strategy is tested against historical and contemporary case studies, which include Ancient Greece, Napoleon; the First and Second World Wars, Cold War but also at the modern post-Cold War era.

Energy Security and International Political Economy specialization aims at providing a comprehensive understanding of the theoretical schemes and the historical context of the global political economy and its interconnection with energy security. It emphasizes on politico-economic facts of the 20th (national state) and 21th century (today's globalized world structure). This specialization examines through case studies, energy security issues and the role and importance of energy in shaping the broader context of international political economy. The course equips students with the knowledge and skills to develop a well-rounded understanding of the interaction between economy and politics, the interdependence of international, regional and domestic events, as well as the role of energy supply and demand, its impact on states, on their geo-strategic importance and on society.

 

With the completion of the program students will:

  • Gain knowledge and skills on the basic terms, theoretical schools and approaches of international studies.
  • Have a deeper understanding of the historical evolution of different approaches to international relations, strategic studies, international political economy and energy security.
  • Analyze developments in international political economy, in terms of its theories, issues and conflicts.
  • Be able to apply the theory of international relations on the contemporary issues of international politics.
  • Evaluate the role of power factors in strategy, states’ relations and non-states actors in the international system.
  • Recognize and critically evaluate research findings and methods.
  • Apply the intellectual skills developed in the program in the preparation and presentation of theoretical and/or applied analyses in the form of a dissertation.
